Colombo International Container Terminals Ltd., (CICT) is a joint venture company between China Merchants Holdings (International) Co., Ltd. (CMHI) a listed blue chip company in the Hong Kong stock exchange and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA). Under a 35-year Build Operate and Transfer Agreement with SLPA, Colombo’s third container terminal with a 2.4 million TEUs capacity is currently being constructed in the Port of Colombo, Sri Lanka, under the Colombo South Harbour expansion project. CMHI holds 85% of the partnership whilst the balance 15% is being held by SLPA. Located adjacent to the Port of Colombo within a new water basin, CICT will have a two-lane access channel with a 20-metre depth and 18m water depth alongside the berths. Colombo’s new seaport terminal will have seamless land connectivity to the existing terminals. and provide for immediate connection of transhipment containers between terminals. CICT will be equipped with the latest design ship to shore quay cranes with a 70-metre outreach, supported with cutting edge IT facilities. On completion, CICT will be South Asia’s only terminal to provide a state of the art facility, equipped to handle the largest vessel’s afloat upon full operation by July 2013 with full completion planned for April 2014.
