The Galle ground was built in 1876 (in the former Ceylon) as a racecourse but cricket became the dominant user of the facility over time. With the Indian ocean visible on two sides of the ground and the famous clock-tower of the 16th-century Dutch fort towering above, Galle's international stadium was one of the most scenic venues in the world. The ground hosted its inaugural first-class-cricket match on 29-Feb-1984 and was a regular part of the International Cricket circuit until Sri Lanka & the stadium was devastated by the tsunami of 26-Dec-2004. After a bit of ‘toing & froing’ it was agreed to rebuild the Sri Lanka venue from the ground up & that work was completed in time for the visit of the England Test Cricket team in 2008. STOP PRESS 14-Jan-2021: happily the England test team is able to tour Sri Lanka again this year & their first Test Match venue is at Galle. Also just heard somebody say on TV that Galle is the closest test cricket ground to the equator . . . who knew?
One of the iconic and most sought after Cricket Stadiums in the world. Used majorly in test cricket. Famously known as one of the best hunting grounds of Sri Lankan team. The Dutch Fort, Clock Tower & the ramparts add colour to this iconic stadium. Was destroyed by the 2004 Tsunami, but was later rebuilt with better facilities.
Galle International Stadium can be considered as the best and the most picturesque one in the world. This is used mostly for Test Cricket Matches and there have been only a few One Day Internationals so far. As this is situated in the centre of the city, it is easier for the fans to reach there. The stadium is surrounded by the World Heritage Site, Dutch Fortress and the beautiful Indian Ocean. Galle International Stadium is considered as The Paradise of Spinners. Muttiah Muralitharan, the spin legend took his 800th test wicket against India here in 2010.
