We thoroughly enjoyed our bird watching tour. We saw over 40 species of birds, monkeys, water buffalos and iguanas. The sunrise tour was relaxing and informative. Our guide was excellent with great knowledge of all the species. We’ve been treated some complimentary water and some biscuits too.

Beautiful Kalametiya lagoon and beach. Tranquil and scenic. Wonderful boat trip onto the lagoon to see the birds catch their breakfast. Long warm swim at the harbour end of the beach. So peaceful. Found a green turtle shell and lots of sea glass for craftwork.

Excellent bird watching. How it works. You go calmly around the area with one stop and a short walk. We manage to see monkeys and a lot of different birds.

Great site for birdwatching. Mahesh and he's crew took us out on an morning tour, even though the water level was low. Great boats, knowledgeable giudes and lots of birds. We spotted 42 different species on our two-hour trip.

It's kinda confusing how it works with these tours, so to keep it short: There are no official tours run by the government or NGOs through the national reserve. Private people offer these tours (and pay the entrance etc. to the government), which is the reason why you probably find several places and start points on maps or other sites for these tours. This one here was the one we chose. Costs were around 5000 RS for a 2hrs tour (total, not per person - the costs refer to one boat), while the other one we checked out wanted 6000. We had a great bird watching experience with Mahesh - our guide for this boat trip through the bird Sanctuary. He took us out on the lagoon with a nice little catamaran, which was monitored by his colleague. Mahesh speaks very well English and is kind and cortuous. Furthermore, he is well versed in terms of all the bird which live in the sanctuary. He even brought binoculars and a guide book to show us which birds we've seen and what's special about them. It was informative and very interesting to learn. In total we saw 39 species in about 2h - and there's many more to explore. So we really thank Mahesh for this great experience and can truly recommend the tour.

From our first contact with Mahesh the service was outstanding. He made sure we knew how to get to his place with the best route possible and even checked on us in the morning to make sure we were not lost. The birdwatching was spectacular. Mahesh kept saying names of different kinds of birds while we sat and enjoyed the views. It was an incredibly relaxing way to spend an early morning enjoying nature.

Kalametiya bird Sanctuary is a superb place for bird watching which situated in down south in Sri Lanka. You will see many kind of local and foreign birds. It is a beautiful lagoon area with brackish water. Ideal location for photography. As well as, we got an unexpected treatment while the tour. We got a fresh fruit plate. Sweet melon, guava and plantain. We started tour early in the morning and finished at about 8.30 am. I recommended the tour.
