Our trip to Yala National Park was a huge success: we saw crocodiles, deer, birds, leopards, fox, water buffalo, wild elephants, peacocks and other animals we couldn’t identify. This visit to Yala was after 30 years and it is now very crowded with tourists and safari jeeps. We hired a driver and a jeep for 3 persons for 4000 LKR. Our driver had his friend stand in line early in the morning to get into the park as soon as it opens. So here’s our advice: get there early and get to potential leopard sites first. The line to get tickets start early so make sure you plan ahead. Then we raced to sites that our driver believed to be the best for spotting leopards, which is the ultimate prize here. Sri Lankan leopards - Panthera pardus kotiya are rare. The National Geographic Magazine reports that only about 700 to 950 exists in Sri Lanka. We saw two and even made a video to share with friends and coworkers here in Los Angeles. Have your driver take you to the rest area near the beach that has toilets. This location is nice to eat your food, relax and take good photos. Have your hotel prepare you enough food for breakfast to pick up on the morning of the trip. Take plenty of water. Take medications if you have motion sickness since the mud roads inside the park are very bumpy. There are two very negative things we saw: one it that the diesel engines of these safari jeeps are noisy that tend to keep the leopards and other animals away. The other is that these diesel jeeps are very polluting and you’ll end up inhaling a lot of diesel fumes. The dirt road create dust clouds. Take goggles and nose covers if you have to. Given everything, it is fully worth the drama. We highly recommend Yala National Park if you have never tried it before.

We saw lot of jeeps with people hunting to see the leopard. It seemed that the guides were more excited to find the leopard, than the visitors. We had a much more relaxed experience in Udawalawe.

Fanbloodytastic! Saw all of the animals in their natural environment. 3 leopards up close, elephants, wild boar, crocodiles, water buffalo, a bear and truckloads of bird life. Sure it is a tourist mecca and lots of jeeps bouncing around and gathering at each sighting, but it is a lot less expensive than a south African safari. We had knowledgeable rangers, who were as enthusiastic and excited as us at each sighting with high fives all round. Highly recommended by us Kiwis!
