Unfortunately it's closed for renovations these days. Not sure when they will open it again. However it's good to note that if you're intending to take photos or videos you'll have to purchase a licence at the entrance. So keep that in mind when you're making your budget too. The licences are separately sold for photos and videos and both will cost you around Rs. 600. Hope this will be open soon.

The two storey colonnaded building on Prince street, pettah which houses the museum was constructed during the dutch occupation of Colombo (1656 -1796) and was the formal residence of the governor of dutch in Ceylon. During his term of office the building has served with many different purposes over the years. Once as a court , teaching training centre, orphanage and It was also uses as a hospital. Now it is a museum which opens in 1982. The building has an unique architectural surrounding by it self. The museum displays the dutch legacy itself

The Dutch Period Museum is a unique museum, which was initially the residence of the Dutch governor, offers a very fascinating insight into the Dutch period in Sri Lanka. Since then, the Dutch Period Museum has been used as a Catholic seminary, a police station, a military hospital and as a post office. Most of the structure remains the same as when the building was set up over three centuries ago. The square courtyard decorating the center of the mansion, its high risen roof and large entrance pillars are all distinctive elements of the 17th century Dutch architecture. As an imposing structure looming over the busy city of Colombo, the Dutch Period Museum is a stark contrast to modern shops surrounding the mansion. This impressive two-storied mansion that remains untouched even centuries later is the perfect picture of time standing still. The Dutch Period Museum houses some amazing artifacts such as photographs, swords, ancient maps, coins, ceramics, documentation of treaties and colonial Dutch furniture. In total, the museum displays more than 3000 exhibits all of which offer an interesting insight into the period of Dutch rule in Sri Lanka.

The museum is located in the hear of Sri lanka's traditional shopping area. Its too busy to use a car, so make sure you walk. It's an off the beaten path Activity in Colombo and I recommend doing it. Just make sure you call ahead since they are renovating the place (see image).
