We stumbled on this surf school as the other better reviewed schools were full. We explained to the instructors that we only had two lessons in weligama and we only wanted the class if the conditions were good for beginners, and if not we would do it tomorrow morning. The waves were super rough, i fell a few times and hurt myself before i decided that it was way harder than weligama and the waves were tough. When talking to the owner, he was very disrespectful and didnt agree to give me the lesson the next day. Terrible attitude, havent been treated like this anywhere else in sri lanka. He even made fun of us in front of his little surfer buddies, and said that “weligama is for children”. Who says that to a customer? Grow up, or at least learn how to talk to Your guests who are paying a significant amount of money for instructors who can barely speak english and for boards that are as old as my grandma.

Received some good advice and made good progress in 3h course over two days. Compared favourably given lonely planets words of caution about surf teachers on this beach.
Rude owner. Not a good school, they don’t care about teaching, only for your money.
General impression was: only in it for the money, no real interest in teaching! I showed up and i actually talked to the owner. He recommended i take an instructor after telling him i took only 3 lessons in Unawatuna and i noticed the waves were much harder to tackle on this beach. The beach also had a beginner area right next to the difficult area. Today the waves at the beginner area didn't look enjoyable so i specifically stated i do not want to show off i am just beginning to understand the basics. He told me i can take an instructor and go for the big waves which is what i did. I also added that i want an honest assesment and we could return to easy stuff. We didn't. I ended up following the instructor's directions which meant paddling over and over just to reach a decent spot to try and catch a wave. In one session i had 4-5 tries the rest was just recovering from waves and more paddling. On return the owner asked me how it was and i was honest, it was terrible and i didn't think it was worth the money. He then blatantly replied that he doesn't care and that he knows how to surf and i don't and i shouldn't have said i was a pro and wanted to go to big waves which was the exact opposite of what i said. He did all this while reclining in his hammock with no real interest for feedback while his surfer buddies approached closer and closer not really understanding the reason of the argument but getting ready to back up their boss. I said okay so i payed the man for the session after we had a very long, in vain discussion on costumer service.
The best surf school in Hikkaduwa! You will be monitored by wave by wave and let you know your faults, in order to make corrections during the lesson. If you really wanted to have a proper lesson as a beginner UR Surf School will be the best place for it.
