As a first-time diver I had a wonderful time! My instructor was Lorna, and she made me feel comfortable throughout the process. It was LKR 12,000 for a beginners course, which included a short test, practice in the pool, a 1hour dive, and all the equipment and gear. It took me some time to get used to the pressure but Lorna was patient, and got me to dive down to 8 meters. We stayed under for almost an hour looking at the sea life and coral. My experienced diving friend told me that I really lucked out for my first time. You don't need a PADI license or any diving experience, just show up and ask for Lorna like I did.
